Sam Weller is a dynamic orchestral conductor with a passion for sharing orchestral music with the world. Based in Sydney and Amsterdam, he’s deeply engaged in innovative projects to reach new audiences.

In 2025, Sam will conduct top-tier ensembles—including the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Klangforum Wien, and Orchestra of the 18th Century—as one of ‘six designated winners’ of the International Conducting Competition Rotterdam.

In 2016, Sam founded Ensemble Apex, hailed as “one of the most exciting new ensembles on the Sydney scene” (Limelight). With sold-out seasons and acclaimed performances of Bartók's Miraculous Mandarin, Strauss' Alpensinfonie, and Verdi's Requiem, Apex is redefining orchestral experiences for all audiences. In 2024, they launched the Apex Festival, supported by the Australian Government.

“Ensemble Apex are next level… If this is the future of music in Australia, we are in excellent hands!”
Nigel Westlake, Composer

Sam's career is flourishing in the Netherlands and Australia, with a recent debut at the iconic Concertgebouw with the Dutch Radio Philharmonic and upcoming engagements including two staged operas with Residentie Orkest and the Dutch National Opera Academy as well as debuts with Tasmanian, Queensland and West Australian Symphonies. In the past Sam has led performances with Noord Nederlands Orkest, The Dutch Radio Philharmonic, PHION, Phil Zuid and a national tour of Die Zauberflöte with Opera2Day and LUDWIG Orchestra.

Sam studied under Ed Spanjaard, Jac van Steen, and Kenneth Montgomery & Antony Hermus, through the prestigious National Masters of Orchestral Conducting, working alongside many of the Netherlands' top orchestras. As an assistant Sam has worked for and learnt from: Simone Young, Karina Canellakis & Jules Buckley. Sam obtained a Bachelor of Music (Performance) majoring in classical saxophone in 2019 at Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

“Weller conducted with complete authority—the performance was remarkably good.”
Andrew Ford, Composer and Writer
